Aldo’s Abode

artist residence + gallery

By locating such a distinctive artist in the inner suburb of Adelaide, the Council has endeavoured to create a forum in Kent Town, where the veteran can share his dexterity with the emerging designers and instigate them through his grip into the art field.

In February, the Australia Council announced a permanent Artist-in-Residence for renowned RSASA artist Aldo Iacobelli, establishing a new creative landmark in Kent Town. The project aims to foster exchange between an experienced practitioner and emerging designers by integrating a public exhibition gallery with a private residence and studio. Located within Adelaide’s creative precinct, the development strengthens cultural engagement while responding sensitively to its urban and heritage context.

The design accommodates three key functions: a flexible double-height exhibition gallery (CLOUD), a secluded studio with controlled natural light, and a private residence organised around a central courtyard. Clear spatial zoning separates public and private realms, ensuring both community interaction and personal retreat. Architectural elements such as water, perforated screens, operable walls, and courtyards blur boundaries between built form and nature, encouraging reflection and movement. Material choices are raw, durable, and recyclable, aligning with both Kent Town’s industrial character and Iacobelli’s artistic philosophy.
